Favour RestingPsalm 90:17

The Roof They Fixed That Still Leaks

This message is for the man setting a bucket back under the same patch of ceiling four months after the repair he prayed over and paid for, who has begun to feel that the work of his hands is the one thing God is not establishing

He hears it before he sees it. That particular sound.

Front room, back left, above the shelf. He knows the spot the way you know a scar. He moves the shelf out about a foot with one hand, the way he has done it before, and gets the bucket from under the stairs where it lives now, which is the part that tells you everything.

Four months.

The man who did it was recommended. He was fine. He was here two days, and he was polite, and it cost what it cost, which was a good deal more than the estimate for reasons that were explained to him at the time and which he accepted.

And before the man came, he had prayed over it. Standing in this room, on his own, on a Tuesday morning, hand up toward that ceiling, feeling the way you feel doing that on your own in daylight, and he had asked God to bless the work and to establish it. He had used that word because it is the word in the psalm his mother had on a card.

Establish the work of our hands.

He sets the bucket down. It makes the sound a bucket makes on a floor.

And what he feels is not anger, it is something flatter and worse, which is the feeling of a man who has begun to suspect that the praying is a thing he does rather than a thing that does anything, and who does not know how to test that without finding out.

If you have ever prayed over something with your hand up in an empty room and then watched it fail anyway, you know that ceiling. And you know the sentence underneath: I do not think I am being heard about the things I actually need, and I have not said that to anybody because of how it sounds.

The Roof They Fixed That Still Leaks

The word before the roof

Let me stand under that patch with you and be straight, because the flat feeling deserves straightness rather than encouragement.

The problem is not the roof. A roof is a roof and roofers are roofers and some repairs fail. The problem is that you tested something with that roof without meaning to. You put a prayer on a specific outcome, and the outcome went the other way, and now the flat feeling is not about the ceiling at all, it is about whether any of it does anything.

So let me set the word straight and then read you the psalm you were quoting, because you were quoting the second half of a verse and the first half is the one you need.

Blessed does not mean the work holds. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is a statement about where He is looking, and it never once described a roof.

And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.Psalm 90:17

Read the order. Beauty upon us, first. Then establish the work.

The psalm asks for something to be on the people before it asks for anything to hold up. And the word beauty there is closer to favor, or pleasantness, or the goodness of God resting visibly on somebody. It is the same territory as the shine on a face in the old blessing.

So the prayer your mother had on a card is, in its first clause, a request for exactly the thing this site is about. God's favor on a person. And your hand went up on a Tuesday morning and you asked for the second half.

You have the beauty of the Lord upon you this morning, standing under a wet patch, and that clause comes first in the psalm for a reason. Psalm 90:17 asks for the favor on the people before it asks for the work to stand, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old prayer land on a man with a bucket in his hand rather than staying on a card in a kitchen.

Who wrote it, and what he had just said

Now where that verse sits, because it is the last line of a psalm and the psalm is Moses.

Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, and it is the bleakest thing in the book. Read what comes before that last verse. A thousand years in Your sight are as yesterday. We spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten, and if by reason of strength they be fourscore, yet is their strength labor and sorrow. So teach us to number our days.

That is the psalm. It is about how short and how hard a life is, written by a man who watched an entire generation die in a desert without arriving anywhere.

And the very last thing he says, after all that, is: put Your beauty on us, and make our work stand.

He is not asking from a good place. He is asking from the end of forty years of things not working, and the asking is not naive, it is the most experienced request in the book.

You are praying the same prayer as a man who had watched everything not work for forty years, and he did not stop asking. Psalm 90 sets that request at the end of a psalm about labor and sorrow, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps our weakness in prayer, so the asking you have started to doubt is not being generated by your own confidence in the first place.

And notice what Moses does not do. He does not stop praying about the work because it has not held. He does not conclude that asking is a thing he does rather than a thing that does anything. He asks, at the end, having seen more failure than you have, and he asks for it twice in one verse.

What I am not going to say about the roof

Now let me be honest about the ceiling, because you will smell it if I am not.

I do not know why the repair failed. I have no idea whether the man did a poor job or whether it was always going to be a bigger job than anybody said. I am not going to tell you that God let it fail for a reason, because that turns a roofer into an instrument and your front room into a lesson.

And I am not going to tell you that the prayer worked in some way you cannot see. That is the sort of sentence that sounds spiritual and quietly teaches a man that words mean whatever is convenient afterwards.

What I will say is this. The prayer was not a mechanism. You did not do it wrong. There is no version of Psalm 90 where the establishing is guaranteed on a Tuesday, and Moses himself did not get the land.

You are favored and the ceiling is wet, and both of those are true in this front room. Scripture puts the request and the labor and the sorrow in the same psalm without resolving it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a man able to keep asking without turning the asking into a machine that owes him an answer.

Get somebody back to look at it. Get a different somebody. That is not a lack of faith, that is what a man does, and the two have never been in competition.

The breakthrough

So here is what I want to put in your hands with the shelf still pulled out.

The prayer did not fail. You have been reading a clause of it as a guarantee, and it never was one, and the first clause of that same verse is being answered right now in a room with a bucket on the floor.

You are blessed in this front room this morning, four months after a repair that did not hold, and blessed means the favor of God is resting on you here. Psalm 90:17 puts the beauty of the Lord on the people before it asks for anything to stand, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that first clause a present fact rather than a line on a card in a kitchen.

So take the word. Not the version where prayer is a mechanism you operate correctly. Moses's. Say it over the four months you have actually had, the bucket that lives under the stairs, the Tuesday morning with your hand up feeling like a fool, and mean by it what the psalm means at the end of a hard life: put Your beauty on me, and I will keep asking about the work.

You have the beauty of the Lord upon you and a wet patch above the shelf, and the psalm asks for both in the same breath. Scripture never separates the request from the sorrow, and His Spirit is the one helping a man to keep asking at all, which is the part you had started to suspect was only a habit.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out loud in the front room. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to say what a word means over your own life came with Him and not with a repair that held. Scripture is under every line here and the Holy Spirit carries it, not the confidence of your voice with your hand up on a Tuesday. What He does about that ceiling is His to decide, in His own way and in His own time, and I am not going to guess it for you. Your part is to say it and mean it, and to get somebody back to look at the roof.

  1. Same patch of ceiling four months on, you are a stain and you are not a report on whether God is establishing anything. Psalm 90 says let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and beauty on a man comes before establishing on his work.
  2. Flat suspicion that praying is a thing I do rather than a thing that does anything, get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that Moses asked this at the end of forty years of watching things not work, and he asked for it twice in the same verse.
  3. Lord, Your beauty is upon me this morning and that clause comes first in the psalm. I am putting the bucket down and asking You again about the work of my hands, and I am ringing somebody about the roof today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
