The trays have not needed refilling once all week.
That is the thing he keeps coming back to, standing behind his own counter at ten to six with the shutters half down at the far end of the row. The saffron is where he put it on Monday. The cumin is a hand's width lower than it was, and that is four days. He has swept twice today because sweeping is something to do with your hands when the aisle is quiet, and the sweeping has made the floor look better than the month has been.
His uncle comes down the row the way he always comes down the row, slowly, greeting three people on the way, and he stops at the counter and puts a hand flat on the wood and looks at the trays and looks at his nephew and says it. "God has blessed you." He says it warmly, with his whole face, the way you say a true thing you are glad about. He means the stall. He means that the boy has a stall at all, which is more than he had at that age, and he is right about that, and there is nothing in him but love.
And the nephew smiles and says thank you, uncle, because you do, and then his uncle moves off down the row and the word stays there on the counter with the saffron.
He looks at it for a while.
The rent went up in February. The wholesaler wants payment quicker than he used to. Two of the restaurants that took a standing order every two weeks for six years have stopped, and neither of them said why, and he has not asked because he is not sure he wants to be told. He does the arithmetic every night in the same chair and every night it comes out the same way and every night he does it again in case it does not.
God has blessed you.
He is not angry at his uncle. He is not even angry at the word. He simply cannot get the word and the trays into the same sentence without one of them being a lie, and he knows which one everybody would tell him to keep, and that is the part that sits on his chest on the walk home.
If you have been handed that word in a month like this one, you know exactly where he is standing. Somebody kind said it over your work, or your house, or your health, and it was not a taunt and it did not feel like one, and it still landed on you like a bill you cannot pay. And underneath the thank you there is a quiet sentence you have never said out loud: if that is what blessed means, then I am not it, and I have not been for a while.

The word was never a report on trade
Let me put the thing on the counter next to the saffron and say it plainly, because you have been polite about it long enough and politeness is expensive.
The pain is not the month. You have had months. The pain is that a good word got said over the month and now the month looks like evidence. Blessed, in the mouth of the row and the mug and the caption, means: look at what came in. So when nothing came in, the word turns around in your hand and starts reading like a verdict on you.
So here is the word as it was actually given, and it was not given in a market, and it was not given to anybody who had one.
The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.Numbers 6:24-26
Read what is in it. A face. Twice. Keeping, grace, peace. There is no inventory in that blessing anywhere. There is no turnover, no yield, no harvest, no house, no herd. It is the oldest formal blessing in the book, the one Aaron was told to put on the people like a name, and every single clause of it is about where God's face is pointed and what He is doing with it.
That is what the word means. Blessed is the favor of God resting on a person. It is His face turned toward you and His hand keeping you. It is not a description of the trays. You have the favor of God on you tonight, in a month that did not sell, and the shine on His face has not dimmed by one degree. Numbers 6 puts the whole weight of the blessing on His countenance rather than on your count, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old priestly line and lays it, as a present fact, on a man sweeping an aisle that is already clean.
Two different words got the same spelling somewhere along the way, and you have been carrying the wrong one. Favor resting on a person. Not comfort resting on a life.
Where the blessing was first said out loud
Now hold where that blessing was given, because the setting is the argument.
Numbers is the desert book. When Aaron was told to say those words over the people, they were living in tents in a wilderness, eating the same thing every morning, with no fields, no shops, no storehouses and no idea how long any of it would last. There was not a market in the entire camp. There was nothing to point at and say look at all this.
And into a camp with nothing to point at, God gives them a blessing to say over each other every day, and He tells them what it does. Put my name upon them. That is the line right after it. The blessing was a name being laid on a people, not a report being read back to them.
So the word arrived, historically, in exactly your circumstances. Not in a good season being described. In a hard season being covered. You are standing under a blessing that was written for people with empty hands, and it has your name laid on it the same way it had theirs. That is what Numbers 6 does with His name, and the same Spirit who carried it through the camp is the one carrying it down a market row tonight.
And notice what it does not promise. It does not say the wilderness ends on a date. It does not say the manna becomes bread and honey by spring. It says keep, shine, be gracious, lift up, give peace. Every verb in it is about Him and about now.
I want you to feel how much room that gives you. You are not required to produce a good month in order to qualify for a word God said over a desert. You were covered by that name before this month started, and you are still covered by it now that the month has gone the way it has gone. Scripture puts His name on the people first and the circumstances nowhere, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old sentence land like something a person can stand on at a counter.
Two things this is not, and both of them matter
I am going to say this carefully, because on this subject there are two ditches and the second one is more comfortable than the first.
Your hard month is not the absence of God's favor. That is the first ditch, and it is the one you have been walking in since February. A tray that stays full is not a message about His face.
And your hard month is not secretly the favor either, dressed up, waiting for you to be grateful for it. That is the second ditch and it sounds more spiritual, which is what makes it worse. Nobody sent you a bad quarter to bless you with it. The month is a month. Numbers does not pretend the wilderness is Canaan. It simply says the face is shining while the wilderness is still the wilderness.
Both halves. Hold them both, because a person who drops the first one starts blaming himself and a person who drops the second one starts thanking God for damage.
And here is the piece that changes the arithmetic in the chair at night. You have peace that was given rather than earned, and it is not sitting behind this month waiting for the numbers to improve. The blessing itself says give thee peace, in that order, as the last clause of a word said over people with nothing, and it is His Spirit who is called the Comforter and who does the giving of it now rather than later.
I do not know what next month does. I would be lying to you if I dressed a guess up as a word, and this site does not do that. What I know is what is written, and what is written is where His face is.
So here is what I want to hand you at ten to six with the shutter half down.
You do not have to make the month look like the word. That was never the job, and trying has been costing you sleep in a chair. The word was never a description of the trays. It was always a description of a face, and He has not turned it, and the month is allowed to be exactly as hard as it has been without that meaning anything about where He is looking.
You are blessed tonight, in this month, with the saffron where you left it on Monday, and that is a fact about His face and not a compliment about your trade. Numbers 6 says shine and keep and be gracious, in the present, over people in a desert, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ancient sentence land on a man in an aisle as something true right now.
Take the word back. Not the row's version of it. His. Say it about the stall you actually have, the rent that actually went up, the two orders that actually stopped, and mean by it what Aaron was told to mean: His face is toward me. He is keeping me. He is being gracious. He has given me peace.
You have His name laid on you, and a name is not something a bad quarter has the standing to take off. That is what Scripture says the blessing was for, to put His name upon them, and it is His Spirit who keeps a name in place when the numbers cannot.
Declare this over yourself
Say this out loud, at the counter or in the chair. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to say what a word means over your own life came with Him and not with a good month. Scripture is under every line here and the Holy Spirit carries it, not the steadiness of your voice. What He does with next month is His to decide, in His own way and in His own time, and I will not guess it for you. What you do is say the word and mean it.
- Month that did not sell, you are a month and you are not a verdict. Numbers 6 says the Lord makes His face shine on a person, and a face is not a receipt.
- Whisper that an empty tray means an emptied favor, get out, in the name of Jesus. His name was laid on people living in tents with nothing to point at, His word records it, and the same name is laid on me tonight.
- Lord, Your face is toward me in this month and You are keeping me in it. You have given me peace rather than sold it to me, and I am saying the word over my own life now, in my own voice, the way I have always said it over everybody else.
