The dryer takes the coins one at a time and thinks about each of them, and she stands with her hand flat on the warm metal door as though she could hurry it.
It is Sunday evening in the laundromat because the machine at home gave out on Tuesday, mid-cycle, with a noise like a dropped tray. On Wednesday the car failed. On Thursday the letter came about her mother's scan, the one that says another one is needed and does not say why, and on Friday she sat in a meeting at work and nodded through all of it while thinking about none of it. Now it is Sunday and her son is on the bench by the window with a comic, swinging his legs, and there are three loads to get through before school in the morning, and she is feeding coins into a machine that has all the time in the world.
Somebody at church, months ago, told her there was favor on her life. She has thought about that sentence more than the person who said it will ever know. She has looked for the favor the way you look for a set of keys, patting every pocket. She has looked in the week, and the week is a dead machine, a failed car, and a letter. If there is favor on her life, she thinks, watching the drum begin to turn, it is doing an excellent job of hiding.
The man who runs the place, who is nearly seventy and has a radio on low behind the counter, comes over and says, "Leave that one on, love, I'll switch it to the next dryer when it's done. Take him home for his tea, come back at eight." She says she couldn't. He says he has done it for half the street and she is not special, and he smiles when he says it, and she takes the boy home for his tea.
You know this week. Not the laundromat, maybe, but the shape of it: the sentence about favor, and the patting of pockets, and the growing suspicion that the sentence was for somebody else. You have been looking for favor to arrive as an improvement, and it has not, and the not is what you have been carrying up and down the stairs.

What the word actually means
Before anything else, I owe you a definition, because a word has been handed to you with the wrong meaning attached, and I would like to hand back the real one.
Blessed does not mean comfortable. It does not mean improving, and it does not mean the week is about to turn. Blessed, in the mouth of Jesus, means that God's favor is resting on a person, and He said the word out loud over the poor in spirit, the mourning and the persecuted, which is not a list of people whose circumstances were getting better. That is the meaning I am using for the rest of this page, and it is the meaning the site is built on. Favor is not a forecast. It is a resting.
Now come to the woman who was told she had it.
And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.Luke 1:30
Notice the day that was said. It was said to a young woman in an obscure town on the day her life became harder than it had ever been, and the Spirit who overshadowed her did not first improve her circumstances. What followed the sentence was a pregnancy she would have to explain, a journey she did not choose, a birth in a place for animals, a flight into another country, and, when the child was still small, an old man in the temple telling her that a sword would go through her own soul. That is the most favored life in Scripture. Not one visible condition improved for years. The favor rested on her while all of it stood.
You are favored in the week where nothing improved, on exactly the terms Mary was. That is not my encouragement; it is the written record, and Luke was careful with it. And the favor is not a mood you generate by looking on the bright side. The Holy Spirit came upon her, the text says, and it is the same Spirit who rests His favor on a life now, without asking the car to pass first.
I keep books, and I will tell you the mistake, because it is an accounting mistake before it is a spiritual one. Favor has been entered in the wrong column. It has been filed under arrivals, as a thing that turns up and changes the total, when Scripture files it under presence: God being with a person, His face toward them, His hand under them, while the total stays exactly what it was. That is why it is doing such an excellent job of hiding. It was never in the column where the looking has been done.
You have God's favor resting on you now, and it was not waiting for better conditions to begin. It is written that the Lord's face is toward those who fear Him, and a face is not a forecast. His Spirit is the one carrying that presence into a laundromat, a scan letter, a Friday meeting, and none of those three had to change for Him to be there.
So here is what I will not do. I will not write your list for you. I will not tell you what held this week, because I do not know your week, and a list somebody else writes for you is a demand dressed as comfort. And I will not tell you that not seeing it was ingratitude, because it was not. It was looking in the wrong column, and that is an easy mistake and an honest one.
Here is what I will do. I will tell you the column exists. You were carried through this week by a God whose favor rests and does not fluctuate, and that is Scripture, from Mary to the field to the psalm about His face, and the Spirit who carried Mary through a stable is not too busy for a laundromat.
Then you speak, because a resting that has never been agreed with out loud is easy to lose under the noise of the week. Faith no heavier than a folded sheet is enough, spoken to a real mountain, and the mountain here is a piece of arithmetic that says favor equals better. It has been running your eyes for months. Speak to it, and tell it what favor actually is.
Whether the car passes, or the machine is fixed, or the letter turns out well, is His to decide, and I would be lying if I told you which way. What I can tell you is that His favor on you does not rise and fall with the week, because it is written that He does not change, and the Spirit who rests on a life does not pack up when the dryer stops.
You are held by something that rests rather than by something that arrives when the week is good. Malachi 3:6 says I am the Lord, I change not, and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as dwelling in a person rather than visiting, which is why the word rest is the right one for a Sunday evening in a laundromat.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where the week actually happened. The right to speak them belongs to you because you are in Christ, whose favor rested on Him while He had nowhere to lay His head, and He put that same standing in your hands. It is Scripture holding up each line, and it is the Holy Spirit carrying them, not the certainty in your voice. Whatever He does with the car and the machine and the letter is His to decide, in His own way, and none of it is the measure of the favor.
- Week where nothing improved, you are not the absence of favor and you are not secretly the favor either; you are a week. Luke says Mary was highly favored on the day her life got harder, and favor rested on her while nothing improved.
- Arithmetic that says favor means better, you were never God's. In the name of Jesus I put you down, because it is written that He said blessed over the mourning, and He was not being ironic.
- Lord, Your favor is on this life and it was never waiting for better conditions. I thank You, because Your Spirit is what held this week, and I am naming one held thing out loud and saying who held it.
