The Contract Went to the Next Farm

He found out at the feed store, which is the worst place, because there is nowhere to put your face in a feed store.

A man he half knows said it as a pleasantry. "Heard about Dan getting the supply, then. Good for him."

And he said "aye" and paid for the sacks.

Dan. Since they were nine. Dan whose mother used to give him toast. Dan who came over at two in the morning in the year of the bad calving and did not go home until the Tuesday.

He needed that contract. Not wanted. He had done the arithmetic on the back of an envelope in March and the arithmetic worked with it and does not work without it, and he has not shown that envelope to his wife.

Two weeks now.

And here is the thing that has started happening and it is the reason he is sitting in the truck in the yard of that feed store instead of driving off. He has begun listening for the name. In the mart, at church, on the phone. He can hear it in a conversation four people away and he tunes in, every time, without deciding to.

He is not going to say anything to anybody. He is a private man and he would find the conversation unbearable.

But he has been listening for two weeks and he knows exactly what that is, because he has watched it in other men and thought less of them for it.

If you have started hearing a name across a room, you know that truck cab. And you know the sentence: I am glad for him and I have a knot in me that gets tighter every time somebody says his name, and I do not know how to have both of those in the same chest.

The word, and then a song in a street

Let me get in the passenger side and say the plain thing, since you are not going anywhere for a minute.

The problem is not the contract, though the contract is a real problem and the envelope in March was honest. The problem is the listening. You have started tracking a name across rooms, and a man who is doing that knows what it is, and knowing what it is has not stopped it once in two weeks.

So let me put the word straight first.

Blessed does not mean the supply comes to your yard. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is a statement about where He is looking. And it is not a quantity, which is the piece that matters most in this cab: there was never a fixed amount of God's favor being handed out in this county, and Dan getting the supply did not use any of yours up.

Now here is the passage, and I want you to notice where the trouble starts.

And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.1 Samuel 18:7-9

The women are singing a good song about a good day. Their army won. Both men are named in it and both are praised in it. There is nothing in that song against Saul at all.

And Saul hears a comparison, and the comparison was in his ear rather than in the song.

Then the phrase that matters: Saul eyed David from that day and forward. Eyed. Watched. Began tracking.

That is a man in a truck cab listening for a name across a feed store.

You are at the beginning of something Scripture describes in one sentence, and it starts in the ears rather than in the heart. First Samuel 18:9 puts the eyeing immediately after the hearing, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one who shows a person what is starting in them while it is still small enough to name.

What Saul did next, and what he did not do

Now the part of that story that should make the hair stand up on a decent man, and you are a decent man, which is why it will.

Saul does not become a monster on that page. He stays a king. He keeps David in the house. He gives him a command. He offers him his daughter. From the outside, for years, it looks like favor.

And underneath it, from that day forward, he is watching. And the watching turns into something that costs him his son, his kingdom and his mind.

The whole of it starts with a man in a street hearing two numbers in a song.

I am not saying you are Saul. You are a man in a truck who came over at two in the morning in the year of the bad calving and did not go home until the Tuesday, and Dan's mother used to give you toast. What I am saying is that Scripture is completely unsentimental about how small the beginning is, and it puts the beginning in the ears, and you have located yours yourself in two weeks, which is faster than most people manage in years.

You have noticed it at two weeks, and noticing is the whole of what is required of you at this stage. First Samuel 18 traces the entire ruin back to one moment of hearing, and it is the Holy Spirit who convicts, which is why the knot has been getting tighter rather than quietly settling into something you could live with.

And here is what Saul never did, and it is the tell. He never once said David's name out loud in blessing. Not in the whole book. He called him the son of Jesse. He wept over him once and it did not hold.

The thing that is not done is the thing that lets it grow.

You have a thing you can do about this today, and it is a sentence rather than a feeling. Scripture commands blessing as an act rather than a mood, and it is the Holy Spirit who deals with what is behind it afterwards and in His own order.

The envelope, and what I will not say

Now the March envelope, because a message that leaves you spiritually tidy and still short is no good to a farmer.

Show it to your wife. This week. That is not a spiritual instruction, it is the plain thing, and the reason you have not is not money, it is that saying the numbers out loud makes them real, and you have been managing them alone since March.

And ring the merchant about the smaller run they mentioned in January. And if there is anything from the scheme this year, put in for it early rather than in the last two weeks the way you did last time.

None of that is a lack of faith. It is what a man does.

I am not going to tell you something else comes in. I do not know. The arithmetic is the arithmetic and I am not going to sit in your cab and invent a supply contract for you.

And I am not going to tell you Dan getting it was providence with a purpose for you in it. He put in a bid and somebody made a decision. That is what happened.

You are favored and the contract went two farms over, and neither of those is evidence about the other. The written word puts God's favor on a person rather than on an outcome, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a man able to hold both without needing one of them to explain the other.
